How to Alter a Hoodie to Make It Bigger

Are you tired of feeling cramped in your favorite hoodie? Maybe it was a gift from a friend who is a size smaller, or perhaps it has shrunk over time due to frequent washing. Regardless of the reason, there’s no need to throw it away or feel uncomfortable. With a few simple steps, you can easily alter a hoodie to make it bigger and restore its comfort. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of resizing your hoodie to fit you perfectly.

Materials Needed

Before you start, gather the following materials:

– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Seam ripper
– pins
– Thread and needle (matching the original color of the hoodie)
– Fabric or interfacing (optional, for reinforcing the seams)

Step 1: Measure the Hoodie

Take your measuring tape and measure the following areas of the hoodie:

– Chest: Measure the widest part of the hoodie across the chest.
– Waist: Measure the narrowest part of the hoodie at the waist.
– Length: Measure from the top of the hoodie to the bottom hem.

Note down these measurements to ensure you make the necessary alterations.

Step 2: Remove the Hood

Using the seam ripper, carefully remove the seams around the hood. Be sure to save the hood pieces, as you will need them later.

Step 3: Cut the Hoodie

With the hoodie inside out, cut along the seam of the side panel. This will create a larger opening to work with. Make sure to leave a 1-inch seam allowance.

Step 4: Add Width to the Hoodie

If the hoodie is too tight across the chest, you can add width by cutting a straight line across the back and front panels, starting from the armpit and extending to the hem. Make sure to leave a 1-inch seam allowance.

Step 5: Cut the Hood

Using the same method as in step 3, cut the hood along the seam of the side panel. This will allow you to add width to the hood as well.

Step 6: Reinforce the Seams (Optional)

If you want to ensure the hoodie stays in shape, you can reinforce the seams by adding interfacing. Simply iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 7: Sew the Hoodie Together

Pin the side panels and the hood back together, right sides facing. Sew the seams, leaving the armholes and neck open. If you added interfacing, be sure to sew through both layers of fabric and interfacing.

Step 8: Add the Hood

Pin the hood back onto the hoodie, right sides facing. Sew the hood seams, and then sew the hood to the neckline of the hoodie.

Step 9: Trim and Hem

Trim any excess threads and fabric. Hem the bottom of the hoodie and the armholes if necessary.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully altered your hoodie to make it bigger. Now you can enjoy wearing your favorite hoodie in comfort once again.
